Artist's Statement This series is called "Pairings". The media, called encaustic, is often mistaken for pottery because of it's durability, sheen, and sculptural qualities. Like pottery, creating a finished piece rehires heat and torch but no kiln. The "paint" is heated beeswax mixed with damar resin, for it's hardening qualities, and pure earth pigments for color. The paint can can be brushed, poured, built and carved. I'm fascinated by how nuanced color and texture seem to change depending on how they are grouped. In this series, the focus is on the joy of spontaneity- a process is very much like the way I cook- tasting and intuiting my way towards something complete and balanced. While some names refer to aromas and tastes, others describe fleeting moments of discovery. In the final presentation, I paired each of two finished pieces to create unexpected "visual flavor" combination or gustatory experience.
